Freedom. We talk about it as an ideal, but I want to talk about it as a responsibility. Because in America, freedom has always shown up in the same place. The dignity of work. In the alarm clock before dawn, in the parent taking a second shift so their child can have new opportunities, in the young person who walks in with no connections, no inheritance, nothing but grit and potential, and builds something anyway.
That's the American promise. Not that you're handed a perfect life, but that you're free to build one. At SHRM, we believe work creates opportunity. It's where people discover purpose, provide for their families, strengthen their communities, and help move our economy forward.
250 years ago, our founders fought for the freedom to shape our own future. Today, that same spirit lives on every time someone starts a business, learns a new skill, earns a promotion, or creates an opportunity for someone else. Our workplaces have changed dramatically, from farms to factories, from offices to a world being transformed by AI. But one thing hasn't changed. America's greatest strength has always been its people. Their resilience, their ingenuity, their willingness to keep building.
So here's my challenge. To every leader, invest in people. Create opportunities. Build workplaces where talent can thrive. To every worker, keep learning. Keep growing. Keep believing that tomorrow can be better than today. Because freedom has never belonged to those who stood still. It belongs to those who build.
I'm Johnny C. Taylor Jr., and on behalf of everyone at SHRM, our 340,000 members across the globe, we're proud to participate in Freedom 250 to help shape the future of work, workers, and the workplace for generations to come.
